Watford boss Xisco Munoz’s future in doubt following Leeds United defeat

Official: Watford sack Xisco Munoz following Leeds United defeat

Leeds edge out Watford in low scoring affair

Leeds got their long-awaited first Premier League win of the season as a Diego Llorente goal was enough to hand them a 1-0 victory over the Hornets at Elland Road.

The defeat for newly-promoted Watford means that they have won just 1 of their last 5 games, and have taken 7 points from a possible 21 on offer thus far.

There is undeniable talent in the squad, with the likes of Ismaila Sarr a standout figure, but time and time again the hornets struggle at the higher level that the Premier League requires after Championship success.

They currently sit in 14th place, but will be wary that they have played just one of the “big six” to date, while some of those below them have taken on several.

Xisco Munoz in the firing line

Now, the notoriously knee-jerk Watford ownership have taken drastic action and sacked their current manager Xisco Munoz.

Xisco, who only took over in December 2020 following the sacking of Vladimir Ivic, guided the hornets out of the Championship and back into the top flight, but appears to have lost the confidence of those at board level after a mixed start to the season.

And indeed, this is what transpired, with a statement on Watford’s social media reading:

The Board feels recent performances strongly indicate a negative trend at a time when team cohesion should be visibly improving.

The Hornets will always be grateful to Xisco for the part he played in securing last season’s promotion and wish him well for his future career in football.

No further club comment will be available until the imminent announcement of a new Head Coach.

With games against Liverpool, Everton, Arsenal, Manchester United, Leicester City, Chelsea and Manchester City as seven of their next 8 fixtures, any boss that did come in would have to hit the ground running if he were to keep his job beyond this torrid run of clashes.

Should Watford really have parted ways with Xisco?
