Tottenham castaway set to join former Arsenal boss Unai Emery at Villareal

Aurier leaves Tottenham

Following the addition of Emerson Royal on deadline day, Serge Aurier’s Tottenham contract was terminated.

Having made 110 appearances for the Lilywhites, Aurier struggled in London. Although a capable defender, he was also prone to moments of madness, such as rash challenges and regular switching off, much to the frustration of the Tottenham faithful.

As a result, a new right-back was a priority this summer, and while Takehiro Tomiyasu (now of Arsenal) was on their radar for much of the summer, they eventually opted for Emerson Royal, who joined from Barcelona.

While yet to pull up any trees for Nuno Espirito Santo, Emerson appears a shrewd acquisition based on his success at Real Betis, and at just 23 years old, will continue to improve.

Aurier set to join Europa League champions

As per reports, the defender is now set to make the switch to Spain, joining Europa League champions Villareal.

He becomes the second Tottenham right back to make the switch since the end of last season, with Juan Foyth also having joined Unai Emery’s side on a permanent deal in the summer, netting Spurs 13,5 million pounds in the process.

Aurier will seemingly be competing with his former team mate for the starting berth, which Foyth has held to date this campaign, making 9 appearances for the Yellow Submarine.

Would Aurier represent an upgrade on the Argentine?
