Southwestern Michigan is a region commonly associated with several high-quality beers and breweries dotting the map. Quality wine was to be found only within the northern Traverse Bay and very few other places. The last several years has found the southwest area quietly making a case to claim the throne. We were lucky enough to receive a few bottles from the area, which is but a slight sample of the rich diversity this region has to offer.
2020 Tabor Hill Cabernet Franc – A beautiful balance of oak, tobacco, milk chocolate on the nose, with a faint wisp of smoke and dried dark cherries on the palate. A decent amount acidity is evident on the finish, which pleasantly lingers about alongside a slight touch of sweetness. Redamak’s and the Vickers Theater aren’t the only decadently pleasurable things about the area. A / $28
2018 Free Run Lemberger – Incredibly earthy with loads of leather, oak, and mild tobacco leaf on the nose, somewhat brooding but wonderfully rich and well-balanced. Matters settle down and sweeten up with the appearance of star anise pods, raspberry and dark plum. This is one for late September evenings next a campfire with the cool Lake Michigan breeze coming to land. A- / $50
NV Round Barn Vineyard Red – A blend with no percentage information disclosed. This is a fruit-forward red blend with heavy notes of cranberry and apple. There’s a generous amount of black cherry and blackberry with a little bit of time resting in the glass. Full of pepper and leather on the finish, the wine is a pleasant surprise which balances the savory and the sweet quite well. B+ / $25
