Porto investigated after Covid-19 outbreaks at clubs including Man City

Porto investigated after alleged travel of a positive Covid-19 player, outbreaks recorded at Manchester City and others after trips to the Dragao

Porto investigated

Liga NOS side Porto are under investigation after a player is alleged to have travelled despite being positive for Covid-19, leading to further enquiries about possible multiple offences.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Porto are now being searched and in particular is the clinical analysis laboratories.

FC Porto’s SAD confirmed that searches took place this morning at the Olival training center due to an investigation conducted by the DCIAP with “a dozen searches, particularly at home and at clinical analysis laboratories”.

According to a statement from the Judiciary Police, the case of a professional football player who is said to have traveled abroad infected with covid-19 is being investigated.

Outbreaks

Whilst nothing concrete has come forward yet, Benfica and Manchester City all experienced Covid-19 outbreaks after playing Porto.

On January 19th 2021 it was reported that 17 positive tests had come back from Benfica. Benfica travelled to play Porto less than a month prior on December 23rd 2020 in a cup match and again travelled on the 15th of January 2021 to play them in Liga NOS.

Manchester City faced Porto on the 1st December, travelling to Portugal for the Champions League tie.

Later that month, Man City’s game with Everton was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the squad.

The instances are very close to one another in relation to playing Porto which has of course raised suspicions.

This could cause serious sanctions to Porto should they be found guilty of anything sinister such as the faking of negative Covid-19 tests to allow key players to play despite being infected and contagious.

The player too could face a severe punishment according to outlet Visao:

At the origin of the investigation, the note says, is a plane trip, abroad, by a professional football player, allegedly infected, and who is susceptible to configure the crime of disease spread, alteration of analysis or prescription, punished with a prison sentence of one to eight years.

The identity of the player is as of a yet unknown.
