October 10, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The deputy head of the Sovereign Council and the tripartite facilitation panel on Monday discussed the Sudanese lawyers’ initiative in a meeting about the ongoing efforts to form a transitional government.
Mohamed Hamdan Daglo Hemetti held a meeting with the Trilateral Mechanism delegation consisting of the head of UNITAMS Volker Perthes, African Union Representative Mohamed Belaiche, and Mohamed Younis a representative of IGAD envoy.
In remarks following the meeting, Belaiche stated they had a positive and constructive meeting with Hemetti.
The two sides “Discussed the developments in the political arena and the efforts of the steering committee of the Sudanese Bar Association, as well as the ongoing dialogue between the political components” he said.
He further pointed to the imminent conclusion of a political settlement accepted by all parties to the political process.
“We see that we are getting closer and closer to a settlement satisfactory to all parties to the political process,” he added.
The tripartite mechanism on September 10 received a draft transitional constitution from the Bar Association’s Steering Committee.
The lawyers call for the formation of a civilian government excluding the military, who would only participate in a national security council led by a civilian.
According to the proposed text the political forces will choose the members of the Sovereign Councils, the 25-member cabinet and the legislative council, in addition to the governors of the regions and states, the chief justice and his deputies, the chief and members of the Constitutional Court.
The constitutional proposals are accepted by many forces but are rejected by the former rebel groups that call for the involvement of the military component in the transitional government.
In remarks from White Nile state, the head of military government Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Monday expressed optimism that the settlement of the one-year political crisis is imminent.
“I’m optimistic that the coming period will witness a breakthrough in the political arena as everyone realizes the dangers (the country is facing).”
