The refrain of wrens and vireos hit us as quickly as we stepped out of the automotive. From each clump of cottonwoods alongside the creek that winds by means of the park, got here the sounds of Home Wrens and Warbling Vireos that competed for the bounty of caterpillars discovered there. The Home Wrens’ tune was a rolling sequence of rattles and trills that it intoned from the decrease shrubs and branches.

Whereas the Warbling Vireos had extra of a run-on warble that it crooned from the higher cover.

Abruptly the flash of a vibrant pink head appeared from the clumps of leaves on the trunk of a cottonwood. A sharply dressed member of the woodpecker household, the Pink-breasted Sapsucker brightened our go to. We adopted it to a nest cavity the place he and his mate alternated feeding duties with this 12 months’s hatchlings.

After a pleasant stroll down the boardwalk to the tufas on the lake’s edge, we loved watching the swallows zooming and zipping round searching for their subsequent meal. On a distant tufa was an Osprey nest. I had seen this nest on a earlier go to a few 12 months in the past with two nestlings.

As we headed again up in the direction of the car parking zone we had been handled to an American Robin that was rigorously clutching a caterpillar in its invoice whereas it looked for extra.
