Barcelona eyeing summer clear-out as up to 14 players could leave club

Barcelona’s mixed season

Barcelona have had a fairly mixed 2020/21 campaign to date.

The Blaugrana endured a very slow start to the La Liga season, which saw Atletico Madrid open up a huge gap at the Spanish top-flight summit.

That gap would be close by Ronaldo Koeman and co., but it now once again looks like Barca will be missing out on the La Liga title after their 3-3 draw with Levante.

Barcelona would also crash out of the Champions League yet again, but did pick up their latest Copa del Rey in April.

And whilst Koeman may shoulder most of the blame for a failed title challenge and European exit, the club’s squad is fairly unbalanced, and full of players bought for big money who have done very little to justify their price-tags – Philippe Coutinho, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele being the obvious examples.

And it is these decisions, along with many more of course, that has led to Barcelona racking up a debt reported to be in the region of €1.1b

Barcelona set for clear-out?

If the latest word doing the rounds in Spain is true, though, then the Catalans could undertake something of a clear-out this summer.

According to Mundo Deportivo, up to 14 players could leave the club in the summer with Barca’s priorities said to include getting wages down.

Some of the players said to be potentially set for a Camp Nou exit this summer are Neto, Samuel Umtiti, Junior Firpo, Miralem Pjanic, Martin Braithwaite, Philippe Coutinho and Matheus Fernandes.

Not all players will be sold, however, with MD reporting that in some cases a loan deal could be sought to ensure Barca are still able to reduce their wage bill.
