Arsenal amongst clubs eyeing Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand

Ryan Bertrand

A report from England on Tuesday has credited Arsenal with an interest in Ryan Bertrand.

Arsenal need a left-back

Arsenal have a fair bit of work to do in the upcoming transfer window, if they hope to begin challenging for a European place again. One area in which they need to target reinforcements is at left-back, to cover for Kieran Tierney.

The Scotsman is one of the Gunners’ top stars on his day, but he obviously cannot play every single game for Arteta and co., with his injury issues this season having highlighted the need for fresh legs.

Cedric has done a decent job covering for the former Celtic standout, but the Portuguese could of course be improved upon.

Bukayo Saka is also capable of filling in at left-back, and did a decent job vs West Brom over the weekend.

However, if Mikel Arteta is forced to play Saka at left-back, that, of course, diminishes the Gunners’ attacking threat.

So, whilst Arsenal probably don’t need to spend that much on a new left-sided defensive option, adding one looks essential.

Arsenal linked with Ryan Bertrand

On Tuesday, as mentioned above, Arsenal have indeed been linked with a left-back.

The Gunners were said to have expressed an interest in Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand during the January window.

The 31-year-old boasts a plethora of Premier League experience, and is still a regular contributor for Southampton, for whom he has made 29 league appearances so far this term.

However, Bertrand is out of contract with the Saints this summer, meaning he could be available on a free transfer.

In turn, according to Goal, Arsenal, AC Milan and Monaco are all competing to sign the stopper. after contract talks with Southampton broke down.

It is added that the Gunners would like to use Bertrand as back-up for Tierney.
